Managing An At-Home Team - Realistically

As the workforce moves to at-home (remote) teams, its important to create connections, community and demonstrate / model kindness. Don't let your team feel isolated when we have so many technology & socialisation skills to create the best 'community consciousness' for our teams.



 
  • Be Human – now more than ever, we need to practice humancy and create ‘Kindness Conversations’ - how are they, their family?
  • Name it to Tame it – putting voice to emotions (Name it)  starts the process of calming down. You can then tame it by changing a ‘cortisol feeling’ (fear, anger, anxiety) into a positive feeling. i.e. “Even though I am stuck at home, I am grateful that I have everything I need here”. “We don’t know what’s happening next week, but I do know what’s happening right now”.
  • Create Community – each team member may feel isolated, how will you continue to provide a sense of community & team? Pick up the phone, video chat, group chat online.
  • Embrace Rituals – did you previously have knock-off drinks at the end of day, chat whilst making a coffee together? Create virtual rituals to match these online with your laptop or device. These are great ‘anchoring’ behaviours; behaviours which, when dealing with uncertainty, can anchor us to something which remains the same. Rituals create a feeling of grounding that teammates will look toward in times of change and uncertainty.
  • ‘Ease Up’ Environment  – What  can I do to  make things just 10% easier for you right now? Stepping in to help will create an environment where everyone will choose to step up.
  • Creating New Habits - Understand that creating new routines will take time. Time to accept the change and time to become embedded.
  • Start with the Leader – you can’t fill up everyone else’s cup if yours is depleted. What do you need? 
  • It’s Ok to Not be Ok – Demonstrate vulnerability; it’s ok to not know everything and to just not be ok sometimes. Role model these feelings, it demonstrates a psychological safe environment in which all team-members can share their realities.
  • Self-regulate – ignoring your own stress will result in a core of stress & anxiety with little patience or tolerance.
  • Trust Your Strengths – trust in what you do well; ask for help in areas you have historically struggled.
